February 17th, 1962 – On This Day in Sioux Falls History, the biggest RECORDED snow storm in Sioux Falls history blows through town! The storm dropped over 26 inches of snow in less than 24 hours!

Coupled with a few smaller storms in the beginning of the month, this major snow fall led to the “Snowiest Month” in Sioux Falls recorded history, with a grand total of 48.4 inches of snow in February 1962!

Of course there is a big asterisk* by this mark – if historic accounts are to be believed (and photographic evidence for that matter) early prairie snow falls have proven big enough to bury trains, block entire country lanes, and drift over first story downtown businesses! But without official records for those snow falls, we are left to speculate what could be worse than 26 inches in a day!!! Yikes!
