January 25th, 1940 – On This Day in Sioux Falls History, local citizens line up around the block to see the newest movie sweeping the nation “Gone With the Wind!”  The beloved 1936 novel piqued the interest of the nation, and its 1939 film adaptation received rave reviews all across the country.

When the film finally reached Sioux Falls the State Theater was barely able to contain the excitement.  On opening day someone snapped this image showing lines reaching around the block just to get a ticket!

Does it say anything, that over 80 years later the only thing getting Sioux Falls citizens to line up around the block is Star Wars and Avengers movies?
