January 14th, 1899 – This Day In Sioux Falls History, marks the first iteration of the Woodmen New Year Dance! Over the years the Dance would be hosted at various venues and draw different sized crowds from year to year. During the 1920s the ball would be “THE” event of the New Year!

Almost as soon as there were permanent citizens in Sioux Falls, there were fraternal organizations like Modern Woodmen of America. Born out of the turmoil of Reconstruction after the Civil War, these organizations organized to support, uplift, and give back to their communities – and its clear, Modern Woodmen quickly did just that for Sioux Falls!
