January 15, 1891 – On This Day In Sioux Falls History, Rasmus B Anderson, internationally acclaimed author, professor, editor, businessman and diplomat, spoke in Sioux Falls. His speech “The Discovery of America by Norsemen” is perhaps the first public record of doubt that Christopher Columbus was the first European in the Americas.

Through his research Rasmus was perhaps the first scholar to discover it was Norsemen (Norwegian Vikings) in 1000AD following Leif Ericson who arrived in America nearly half a century before the explorers from Spain. Anderson would go on to work extensively to get recognition for Leif Ericson and his voyagers. He was the driving force behind “Leif Ericson Day” in multiple states and as a federal observance in 1964.
